YAL Conference Workshop Description

Out of the Dust: A Closer Look
Matt Dealy and Kate Thomas, Presenters

Using a visual teaching strategy (VTS) to examine the conditions of the Great Depression, teachers will be exposed to Dorothea Lange's photographs in relation to the poetic novel Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. Lange's photographs provide primary source documents for understanding the challenging conditions of a people displaced from their homes and land. The power of the photograph and written word to document an important historical period in American history allows us to develop observation and inference skills extending to the development of personal voice. Participants will practice the VTS on Lange's Migrant Mother and Children photo and connect the experience of a migratory farm labor mother with the isolation of a child growing up without a mother on a farm during the Dust Bowl. - Workshop Description for YAL 2011
