What makes this a good YAL choice...

A graphic novel memoir set in Iran, Persepolis makes a great YAL book. The story is told from the young narrator's perspective as she grows up in what becomes a growing hostile environment in Iran. Marjane Satrapi shows how she negotiated the complex difficulties in growing up in this environment. Possible themes to explore include: feminism, censorship, class consciousness, war, history, identity, as well as the comic as a form. — Germania Solórzano

Peeking into Persepolis: Discovering the Universal Truths of Story
Germania Solórzano, Jeremy Babcock and Eduardo Salas, Presenters

In Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi invites us to peer into her childhood experiences growing up in Iran. Her candid and complex observations give us permission to unveil our own uniquely personal stories. We invite you to discover, stumble and grow in an open environment that is conducive to creating a story. Experiment with perspective and point of view. Play with story cubes and the idea of a beginning, middle and end, and finally generate your own comic panels and narrative. — Workshop Description for YAL 2008
