What's So Secret About the Secret Life of Bees?
Sarah Lushia and Michero Washington, presenters

Things too numerous to name. But mostly what humans find secretive and fascinating about the lives of bees is how very differently their "communities" and "cultures" function from our own. This idea of variance between and within cultures and communities is a theme the author grabs and carries throughout. We will examine the themes within the text alongside non-fiction books that can be used in the classroom about such issues as Civil rights, life in the south, women's rights, the science of bees, and other topics to make this text and its meanings more available to students across the spectrums of race, class, and gender. So join us as we work together to uncover the honey-coated secrets of teaching this text.
