YAL Conference Workshop Description

Evolving Toward Our Best Selves: Darwin, God, and Personal Growth in Skellig
April Nauman and Durene Wheeler, Presenters

Change can be painful and hard. No wonder so many of us resist it. Harder still is acknowledging the need for change, especially in ourselves. David Almond's remarkable book, Skellig, provides a platform for investigating how we--as a species, as a society, and as individuals--must change over time. In our workshop, you will learn how Skellig can spark rich and meaningful interdisciplinary study. Through close reading of Skellig, your students will engage with the big ideas of the scientific theory of evolution, spirituality, the healing power of love, cultural conflicts between religious and scientific views, what's important to learn, and what it means to grow up and become a responsible, caring adult. In the tradition of magical realism, Skellig is the story of ten-year-old Michael, whose life is in utter chaos: his family has moved to a new house, his baby sister is seriously ill, and his dilapidated garage contains a weird, mysterious being who seems to be dying. - Workshop Description for YAL 2011
